We had a bright and early departure of 8 am as we were off to Versailles. It was a little bit of drive so either Alex or Valerie would give us some information while we making the trip. As we turned the corner and got our first glimpse, it was already so impressive from just the outside. We, again, divided into two smaller groups and used the group entrance. It is really quite unbelievable in size and décor. Alex was our guide and he described everything for us and we had a photo op in the Hall of Mirrors. After we finished touring the inside, we made our way to the gardens. We had a little bit of a tour there and then had a tram waiting just for our group to make our way to another area where we would be having lunch. Within the gardens, there was a restaurant where we would have lunch together as a group. Afterwards, there was an option to bike ride or have about an hour on your own. The weather was not great so Sue, Carrie and I decided to just walk around a bit. Chris decided to join on the group bike ride. About halfway through, the sky opened up on all the bike riders – who were only half way through and no choice but to bike through the rain. They were all soaked but still in a good spirits when we all met back up on our coach bus. We made the ride back to the hotel where we had a few hours to regroup before meeting back again to go to our Farewell Dinner. The dinner took place in a private room at a different hotel. When we arrived, there were appetizers waiting for us. Lewis and Melissa were wearing berets and then said they had berets for all of us. We were invited into the main dining room and our first treat of the evening was an accordion player. In between meal courses, we had some different presentations. Melissa and Lewis had put together a slide show of our entire trip. It went day by day with a variety of pictures of all our activities. They also presented everyone who were celebrating a birthday or anniversary with this trip with a card and pins. We even had a little dance with everyone. We made our way on the coach back to the hotel and sadly, that was the formal end of our Adventure. The next morning, Melissa was in the lobby to facilitate each guest’s departure. We were heading to Disneyland Paris and we had booked a private car transportation to Disneyland Paris through Adventures by Disney. Melissa was there to make sure we were all set and sent us on our way.
I really can’t say enough about how amazing this trip was. Adventures by Disney does everything right. You can truly let go and trust them to take care of everything. I definitely hope to do more adventures in the future! We were back to early departures with a meeting time of 8:20 am. We met Alex who would be a second local guide for the next two days along with Valerie. They said that we needed to be in smaller groups for the next two days so now we had two guides to lead the smaller size groups. Our first stop for today was the Louvre. The Louvre was open to the public during our visit but we arrived at opening and used a group entrance. I will admit that except for knowing a few of the famous pieces of art in the Louvre, I really didn’t know anything else. I had no idea that it was formerly a fortress and a palace. And I had no idea at how large it is. Alex said that as an estimate of the size if you were to spend just 30 seconds looking at each piece of art in the Louvre, it would take you over 2 ½ months to see everything. We had Alex as our guide and he started off by explaining where we would enter was formally the moat of the fortress. He then lead us through exhibits for about an hour or so. Of course, the Mona Lisa was part of our tour. I would say there was about 3-4 layers of people gathered in front of it. Lewis had us gather together and as other guests would leave, we would move forward until our group was up at the roped off area. Then we made a little semi-circle and took turns with our pictures and the Mona Lisa behind us. We had some free time and then we were off on a little walking tour. Notre Dame is still not open to the public but we were able to take some photos on the outside. We next made our way to the Latin Quarter where we would have a few hours of time on our own for lunch and shopping. The guides walked us around first to give us a lay of the land, make some suggestions and set up a time / place to meet back. We chose a little café and order two different kinds of cheese fondue. I cannot imagine that I will ever have a better fondue in my lifetime. Our table was set up with two small burners, a basket of pieces of bread and we had a long fondue fork. Then the fondue came out in cast iron pots. It stayed hot and bubbly the entire time. It was so so good! After we were stuffed from fondue, we did a little walking around and shopping. We even had a little gelato for something sweet before it was time to meet back up with our group. Our last stop of the day was the Paris Opera House. This was a sleeper hit for me. As soon as you entered it was so big and impressive. We walked all through the “lobby” area which is like no theatre lobby I have ever seen. My smaller group was with Valerie this time and she was guiding us around. This is the one time that the crowds were a little bit of a challenge. Even in other stops where we did not have a private tour, the other guests were never really an issue. We stayed with our guides and were fine. The Opera House on this day was very crowded. It did make it challenge at times to move around and get a clear view of everything while staying with our group. Valerie explained that the next room we were about to enter was where the audience would go to socialize during the intermission. My mind was blown when we entered as it was nothing like I expected. It was huge and beautiful and so ornate. We also got a look at the door leading to Box 5 – which would be the famous box of the Phantom of the Opera. Unfortunately, there was a rehearsal happening when we were there (yes it is still an operational theater) so we were not able to go into the theater itself. I would love to go back and see a performance there. We were back at the hotel by around 4 pm. The rest of the evening was on our own. The guides gave some restaurant suggestions and we looked online at the choices. In the end, we decided to each at the lounge in the hotel. It honestly wasn’t that great, but we were happy to stay in and have an early evening as the next day would be a long, full day.
We had a mid morning departure time today of only 10:30 am. Like our London hotel, our Paris hotel had a breakfast buffet that was included. We were able to go and have breakfast at our leisure and relax a bit before meeting our group. Our first stop of the day was the Eiffel Tower. We all had an opportunity to take photos and then we made our way through security and up the elevator to the first floor of the Tower. We had lunch as a group in the restaurant there. After lunch, Valerie gave us a little tour of the first level of the Tower and told us what we were seeing from there. Then we had some free time. Brave souls – like Sue and Carrie – walked up the stairs to the second floor. Chris and I checked out the gift shop and more around the first floor. We all had to meet at the base of the tower. Even going down the stairs from the first floor was a lot. Our next stop was another Adventures by Disney hands on experience. We went to Ecole Ducasse, a French culinary school, to learn to make macarons. We were divided into two groups and went into two separate kitchens. We met our instructor and we each received an apron with the school logo which we were able to keep. Giuseppe was our instructor. He was funny and patient with us. Some elements he had prepped in advance but we all got to do at least part of the process. We all took a try at piping out the batter for the cookies and at the end we each piped the filling and completed the macarons. When we were done, they had a small reception area set up for us with drinks and each group was able to taste the other groups macarons as well as our own. Like archery, this was a fun experience and one of my favorites of the trip. After macaron making, we went back to the hotel for a break and then we were back together at 7:30 pm to go on a dinner cruise on the Seine. We got to see the Eiffel Tower lit up before we boarded the boat but was raining. When we disembarked the boat later, we were able to see it clearly and see it sparkle – which it does every hour for five minutes. The dinner cruise was very nice. We saw the sites along the Seine lit up and I was remembering back to the opening ceremony of the Olympics. It was such a shame that the weather was so awful that night as having the ceremony along the Seine was such a unique idea. We were also able to see the Statue of Liberty and get some great pictures of it with the Eiffel Tower. Today was Chris’ and my actual anniversary. The guides had a card and pins for us while on the cruise. It was time to say goodbye to London and move onto Paris. We were up for breakfast at the hotel and then departed at 8:30 am to head to the Eurostar. The guides were great at explaining exactly how we would go through each part of the process. One guide led the way and one stayed behind the last person to make sure we were all through the ticket / immigration process. Once got through everything we had a little time to wait until the platform was announced for our train. We were in Premier Class which included a small meal. It was about 2 ½ hours and then we had arrived in Paris. We headed to our coach and met our new local guide, Valerie. We were going to Montmartre to see the Sacre Coeur. When we arrived, you had your choice of taking the funicular up to the Sacre Coeur or walking up the steps. Chris and I took the funicular while Sue and Carrie took the stairs. Once we were all at the top, we had a photo op with the Sacre Coeur (we did not go inside). Valerie gave us a walking tour of the area. There were little shops and artists who would do caricatures. There were also little cafes. We had some free time but the weather was not kind. We took a brief walk around and then got a table for snack and some drinks. We had our first Paris crepe with Nutella. By the time we met back up with our group, it was pouring which led to our first purchase in France – umbrellas. We made our way back down to the coach and headed to our hotel. We were staying at Hotel du Collectionneur. It was in a more residential area though it was only about a mile from the Champs Elysees. Our guides came on the bus and handed out our hotel keys so we could go straight to our rooms. Our luggage was already there waiting.
We had time to settle in and then we met back in the lobby to head out for a “Welcome to Paris” dinner as a group. We had a 7:45 am departure this morning. Like yesterday, the hotel restaurant opened early at 6:45 am so we could have breakfast before we departed. Our first stop of the day was Hampton Court. Hampton Court was home to Henry VII in the 16th century. Later William III and Mary II took up residence there and in 1838 it was opened to the public. We were there before the public and we had a private guide throughout our visit there. To be honest, I saw “Hampton Court” on the itinerary but I really didn’t know what it was and I hadn’t looked into further before the trip. Being a fan of the Tudors, it was very cool to be there and I enjoyed this stop very much. We left Hampton Court to take a short bus ride to the town of Windsor. The guides took us into the middle of the town and explained what our options were as we would be on our own for about two hours here. A tour of Windsor castle was not part of our tour, but the guides explained that they had looked online and there were some available slots for a tour if you wanted to grab tickets and do that on your own. Otherwise, they suggested various restaurants / pubs in the town. It was a Sunday and having “Sunday roast” was suggested as well as where to get it. They also gave us directions to the “Long Walk.” The Long Walk is several mile long path that starts from Windsor Castle. There was also a grocery store in the town if you wanted to check out a local supermarket. We decided to walk down to the Long Walk for some photos and then we looked around in some souvenir shops. In search of a Sunday Roast, we settled on a pub called The Prince Harry. The pub was originally built in 1518 and was a guild hall. We enjoyed a pint and Sue and Carrie tried the Sunday Roast. Afterwards, we did some shopping including a stop in the grocery store for some local treats and a coffee shop for a little pick me up. We met back up and headed off to an estate for one of the hands on experiences of the trip – archery. There were 4 instructors and they started by dividing us into two groups. One group got a demonstration and learned about the history of the longbow and how it was used in wars (my group started out there). And the second group worked with instructors to learn how to use the long bow. The instructors were patient and very good at teaching. Each person had five arrows while you were learning. You would shoot your first one, with guidance from the instructor, and then depending on how you did, the instructor would tell you want to do differently for your next arrow. There was not one person that did not end up at least hitting the target. At the end, we divided into four teams for a little competition. Each person got two arrows, and you got one point for just hitting the target (bullseye didn’t count more). This was the first example of carrying on despite the weather. It was perfectly fine when we arrived and then it poured during the activity. No one flinched – everyone just grabbed jackets / umbrellas and carried on. It stopped within about 10 minutes and there was even a rainbow afterwards. I really enjoyed the hands on experiences. It is something different that you probably wouldn’t even think to do on your own (if it was even possible to do on your own) and it was always nice when it was just our group. This was our last activity of the day with ABD. Back at the hotel, we decided to eat dinner in the restaurant there, which was very good. It was good to stay in as well because we needed to pack up as the next day we were heading to Paris.
Another Adventures by Disney difference – We had to have our suitcases packed and ready in our rooms by 9 pm. We had luggage tags from ABD to put on the suitcases. A person from bell services came and picked them up and the next time we saw them was in our Paris hotel. We each packed a carry on to bring on the train the next day. It was so nice not to have to worry about transporting our suitcases ourselves. Bright and early, we were on our way at 7:30 am. We boarded our coach and met our local guide, Natalie. She was with us throughout our time in London. We also each got a Vox unit and earphones. We held onto these for the entire trip so whenever we needed to listen to a guide anywhere, we had them with us. Our first stop was a photo op with the Tower Bridge. Because we were so early, there was no one else there. At each photo stop, the guides took individual family photos with our own cameras and with theirs. We received all the photos to download at the end of the trip. Next, we entered the property of the Tower of London and had a greeting from a Beefeater. Beefeaters are the guardians of the Tower of London. They protect the Crown Jewels and conduct tours of the Tower. He gave a brief overview of the Tower of London’s history. Then we moved on to the viewing of the Crown Jewels. The Crown Jewels exhibit was opened just for our group that morning. We had a private guide there. They opened the vault to let us in and then locked the vault door behind us. Melissa and Lewis had let us know beforehand that if anyone felt too hot and needed to leave, they would assist but we would probably not be allowed to re-enter. We were not allowed to take photos. To say they were impressive is an understatement. After we exited this exhibit, Natalie gave us some more information about the grounds of the Tower of London. There is a monument on the location where all of the beheadings took place. We were about to have some free time to explore so Natalie gave us an overview of the buildings / exhibits that were available and about how much time it would take in each so we could budget our time. We choose to go up into the imprisonment tower. Prisoners would carve “graffiti” into the tower walls and you can view them. They were incredibly detailed. Amazing to see. We also had time to go through a brief exhibit that had replicas of the various torture devices that were used at the Tower. As we were finishing up, the Tower had been opened to the public and it was starting to get busy. It was great to have had all that time on the grounds to ourselves. Now we were off to our next activity – a high speed boat ride on the Thames. Here was an example of this being “your” adventure. Sue didn’t want to do this activity and Carrie decided to stay with her. She spoke with Lewis and Melissa and knew what time we would be done and where to meet us. Chris and I continued on to do the boat ride. Once again, it was just our group. We were divided into 3 groups, given lift vests and a safety briefing and then we boarded our boats. Most of the ride was going along the Thames and seeing the major buildings and sites from the water. There was a guide on board who explained all that we were seeing. Then at a certain point, they cranked up the James Bond music and we were off! It was about 10-15 minutes of going fast with some sharp turns and a big u-turn at one point. It was fun and the staff was great. We slowed down as we made our way back to the dock and got to see Tower Bridge opening. We met back up with Sue, Carrie and our local guide Natalie for one more group photo. Then it was on to our next location – lunch! Our lunch was at a local pub called Kings Stores. Everyone was able to get an alcoholic beverage from the bar, if you wanted, and then our group had a private room upstairs. We had all pre-selected our meals. They had little cards with our names and selections that we put at our place settings so the servers would know who ordered which items. Had to get fish and chips here. It was very good, though very big! After lunch, we were onto our next location – St. Paul’s Cathedral. Using our Vox devices, Natalie gave us an overview tour and then we had a few minutes to walk around on our own. We then went down into the crypt area and Natalie gave us a tour there as well. That area was certainly not what I expected. While it did have the final resting place for many people, that was also the location for the gift shop and a little café. We finished up there and were on our way to the last location for the day – Buckingham Palace. The Palace is not open year round, but it did happen to be available for tours when we were there. The tour was not part of the ABD but the guides were great at looking online and seeing that there was availability for the next tour, if anyone was interested. You could book it online on your own. You would then be on your own to go back to the hotel. Several people did do this, but we did not. So for us, it was a photo op similar to what we had done the day before with our driver. We went with the remaining group back to the hotel for a regrouping break. Prior to the trip, we could see what evenings would be “on our own” but we did not make any plans. We didn’t want to be locked into anything. The ABD guides were great about making suggestions for activities and restaurants. On our first day, they mentioned that this would be a good night to see a show on the West End, if we could find tickets. We looked at availability and ended up getting tickets to see MJ, the Michael Jackson musical. We have not seen this show on Broadway.
We took a cab over and Sue had scheduled a cab to pick us up with the best guess at our desired pick up time. The show was good – the music and the performers were great. It ended about 2 minutes later than we had scheduled the cab and Sue looked on her app and the driver had cancelled. When we got outside the theater, it was very busy with pubs and people and not many cars. The app Sue was using was not showing any availability. Thankfully the hotel was only a little over a mile away, so with the help of Google Maps we walked back. It wasn’t ideal but we made it. I know I fell into bed after a very long and full day. **Will contain all the details of the Adventure by Disney portion of the day, which will include spoilers. Our Adventure by Disney tour starts today but only at 6:30 pm with the Welcome Dinner so we had the day to ourselves. We had breakfast at the hotel and then did stop by to say hello and meet our guides before we headed out for the day. Melissa and Lewis were our Adventure guides. I can’t say enough good things about them. They were amazing! We had set up a private driver from 9 am to 3 pm. The only items on our agenda were the London Eye and tea at Fortnum and Mason. When I worked with the company to set it up, the plan was the London Eye at 9:45 am (the company included the tickets) and then I had made tea reservations at 11:30 am. When we met the driver, he said the London Eye didn’t open until 10 am so he drove us around a bit and gave us some information about London. He dropped us off for a 10 minute photo op at Buckingham Palace. We headed back to the London Eye and it didn’t seem to be moving so our driver looked up the operating hours. It had shifted to off season and didn’t start until 11 am. So we pivoted and headed to Fortnum and Mason. Fortnum and Mason has been at their 181 Piccadilly location for over 300 years. We had tea booked at their Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon. But first, we had time to shop. There was so much! And their Christmas shop was open which was fun to explore. I LOVE scones and I regret not buying some that day. I also enjoy an afternoon tea, and this certainly did not disappoint. We each chose our own tea and our menu. We all did the traditional tea menu except for Sue who chose the “savory” menu option. Each tower was for two people. I didn’t love all the finger sandwiches and Chris didn’t try any of them, so he ate the desserts. The scones were SO good. After we were done, I texted the driver to pick us up and we were on our way back to the London Eye. The company included “Fast Track” tickets, so we didn’t need to wait at all. The Eye takes about 25 minutes to complete a full circle. It wasn’t overly exciting but cool to get some nice pictures from the top. When we met back up with the driver, we asked if he could drop us off at Harrods and then we would end our time with him there and make our way back to the hotel on our own. I don’t have any photos from Harrods. The most impressive area to me was the Food Hall. So many different prepared food options. When we were done, Chris and I wanted to get the full London experience, so we decided to take the tube back to the hotel. Thanks to Google maps that was pretty easy. My sisters took a taxi and the tube was definitely faster as London traffic is crazy. We had a few hours to relax before meeting our Adventures by Disney group in the lobby at 6:30 pm. As would be the case throughout the trip, everyone in our group was on time. Melissa and Lewis led us downstairs to a private room for our first official ABD event. Seating was open and it was a buffet as far as dinner. Wine and soft drinks were included, and that would be the case at each group meal. This was an adult exclusive tour, so no children. As our greeter had mentioned the day before, we had a total of 32 adults, although for the Welcome Dinner 4 adults had yet to arrive due to flight delays / cancellations. Melissa and Lewis went over logistics and general information. Every evening we would get a text message that would remind us of the departure time for the next day, what weather is predicted and anything else that was important to know. The schedule for the entire trip is ambitious. Melissa and Lewis said this is not a vacation, it is an adventure. They also said it is YOUR adventure. So, if there was something in the plan that you didn’t want to do, it was totally fine to skip it. They just needed to know so they could keep track of everyone. It is also a rain or shine tour. Everyone takes place despite the weather – which we would experience several times. Then one member of each party had to stand to introduce themselves, say where they were from and what they were most looking forward to on the trip. We had a lot of people that had come as a birthday or anniversary celebration. We had mainly couples or mother / daughter traveling together. There was one trio of gentlemen and one woman who was traveling solo (on her 7th ABD!). **Spoiler alert** We then had a surprise visit from Sherlock Holmes! He led the group through a series of clues and puzzles to finally discover our first pin of the trip. He was very funny and did a wonderful job. Dinner ended with the announcement that our departure time for the next morning was 7:30 am from the lobby. Breakfast at the hotel was included and the restaurant would be opening at 6:45 am just for us. Throughout the trip, you did breakfast at whatever time you liked keeping in mind the departure time for the day.
After over a year, the time had finally come for our Adventures by Disney trip. Chris and I had done one adventure previously – the Southern California adventure a little over 10 years ago. This would be the first ABD for both of my sisters. Just like you should arrive a day ahead of your cruise, you should also arrive at least a day ahead of your Adventures by Disney tour. Flight issues happen and you can start to get adjusted to the time difference. Two couples on our ABD tour missed the parts of the first day due to flight issues. We left NY at 6:30 pm and landed in London at 6:30 am. We had scheduled activities starting at 1:30 pm. The idea was to sleep on the plane, hit the ground running to stay awake until a “normal” bedtime. Unfortunately, I didn’t sleep at all on the plane despite my best efforts. So it was going to be a long day… Because we booked our additional night through Adventures by Disney, transportation from the airport to the hotel was included. After we had our bags and were exiting baggage claim, our greeter and driver were waiting for us. The greeter was very nice and started giving us some basic information about our tour and London. She said there would be 32 guests in our group – some had already arrived; most were arriving today and a few arriving tomorrow. She and the driver walked us to the car, got us all set and we were on the way to the hotel. The hotel for the London portion of the trip was the Kimpton Fitzroy. It was in a nice quiet area of London, near Russell Square. The staff was very friendly and always available to assist. We knew our rooms wouldn’t be ready yet, but we dropped our bags and completed the check in at the desk. Our next stop was Fortitude Bakery which is on the street directly behind the Kimpton. I had looked at what was in the area and this bakery was very popular. I had started following them on Instagram and they always have a huge line. It was a little late in the morning by this time and the line was minimal. We got coffee and a pastry and took it back to the lobby of the hotel. While we were relaxing in the lobby, we received a text from our Adventures guides. They would be in the hotel the next morning to say hello and the official start of the of the adventure would be at 6:30 pm the next day for our Welcome dinner. They also sent a link to a form to complete for meal choices throughout the trip. We each had to use the link to make our choices, and this made each group meals so much easier throughout the trip. The next activity for us was a private food tour of Borough Market. Through research, we found that one only person has access to do food tours in the market itself. My sister worked with her to schedule a two hour tour for the four of us. It ended up that our guide would be an assistant because the original person was on vacation, but she was wonderful. We took a cab to the meeting location to meet her. She asked about food preferences / allergies and then we were off! The tour included ALL the tastes. She gave us a lot of info about the market itself and navigated us through it while stopping to enjoy a lot of food. We did a lot of sharing and small bites. We were glad that we had decided to make this our dinner. This is all the things we got to try: sugar cane juice, a few cheeses, dried meat, a few kinds of olives, sausage roll, oysters, cookies, truffles, donuts, humble crumble, hard cider, gnocchi, grilled chicken, an Iranian dumpling and goat milk ice cream. Our guide even took our picture at a perfect photo op wall. Now very full, our rooms were ready, and we went back to the hotel to settle in. The room was small but very nice. There were popcorn, cookies and bottled water which was replenished daily. The only negative was there no dresser, only a wardrobe, so storage was limited. I do like to unpack which was a challenge. We still had one more activity for the evening. We were off to the West End to see Hamilton. Sue and I have seen it more than once on Broadway. It was the first time for Chris and Carrie. It was amazing as expected and fun to see little differences. There were a few minor lyric changes, and it was funny that some lines that get a big reaction in NY got no reaction in London (like “Everything is legal in NJ”). We had hired a driver to and from the show which made it very easy for transportation. We were definitely tired at the end of a very long day but we all made it!
Here is a full description of the suite from our recent cruise with two video walk throughs at the end. The Briar Rose Suite on the Disney Wish is one of two - two story, two bedroom Royal Suites. It sleeps 6 guests and is located forward on Deck 13 - with the second bedroom upstairs technically on Deck 14. As you enter, there are two closets to your left and a little decor in the entry way. These closets would work great as storage if your party has guests using the pull out sofa for sleeping. The next room directly in front of you is a full bathroom with a stand up shower. Again, this would work for guests using the living room sofa bed for sleeping or, in our case, with 3 of us, we used this bathroom so that each of us could have their own. Then you walk into the kitchen, dining room and living room. The kitchen has an incredible amount of storage space. The refrigerator was stocked with the beverages we requested as well as some other beverages. There were also two freshly squeezed juices. Our concierge host told us that if we liked either to let them know and they would replenish them daily. The second drawer of the fridge was the freezer section which was stocked with Mickey bars that would be replenished as needed. And then the third drawer had ice. There was a countertop with a charcuterie board waiting for us and a wine cooler that had 2 bottles of wine and a bottle of champagne for us to enjoy at any point. We were able to bring them to dinner with no corkage fee. Just past the counter area was the dining room table and to the right, the living room space. The TV in the living room was on a lift, so we ended up moving it down so we would have more open space. Off of the dining room area is the first bedroom. This has a king size bed, walk in closet and full bathroom with a stand up shower. There is also a door from this bedroom out to the balcony. The Holiday decor was something we purchased as an on board amenity. Back out in the living room there is a spiral staircase that goes upstairs to the second bedroom. This bedroom also has a king size bed and walk in closet. It has a full bathroom with a shower and bathtub. The windows in the bathroom are frosted with the touch of a button. The balcony space was huge. There were two regular chairs, a table with six chairs around it, two loungers and a hot tub. We did discover that depending on how the ship is docked, there is not a lot of shade out there. On our Nassau day, it was too hot to be out there in the full sun until late afternoon. We were able to get full use of it for most of the day when we were in Castaway Cay. One of the perks of the Royal Suite is being able to order hot items for breakfast delivery. You just fill out the card and put in on your doorknob the night before. The concierge hosts would arrive each morning and set up our table with placemats and everything from our order. |
